WebPage Fundamentals with FrontPage '98 |
| Web Page Fundamentals with FrontPage 98 is a comprehensive book that gives users a rich and accessible introduction to creating Web pages using Microsoft FrontPage 98. It is appropriate for individual use as well as in both corporate training and college classroom settings. This book is different in many ways: It covers all the skills necessary to take the Expert Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Certification Exam for FrontPage 98 via hands-on exercises and examples. More skills and areas are covered than MOUS criteria requires. For example, Project 10 is dedicated to teaching students how to use Microsoft Image Composer, the graphic-editing program included with FrontPage 98. Also, users learn how to set field validation rules for form fields, manipulate images within FrontPage, create lists, and learn many other skills throughout the book not required by the MOUS criteria. Step by step exercises take users through each skill. Plenty of illustrations aid the learning process. Lesson steps are well defined and supported by figures detailing the desired lesson step results. The underlying HTML code created by FrontPage is also covered to aid the learning process. Although FrontPage creates the HTML code for the user, it is still important to learn the HTML code itself. This is because even the best WYSIWYG editor can't cover all the HTML tags New HTML tags are created on a frequent basis, and users learn that they can type in the tags directly in the FrontPage Editor. By understanding the code that is automatically generated by FrontPage, users better understand how to implement new code on their own. A running Web site is created on a Project by Project basis, with users learning and applying new skills to their Web site. When users finish the book, they have created, modified and thoroughly tested a FrontPage Web similar to a real-world situation. Sidebars help users with key terms, potential problem areas and tips and tricks. Every time a new term is used it is defined. Potential problem areas are not only identified but potential solutions to the identified problem are also given. Tips are provided to contribute additional information, and to guide users with alternative ways of completing a particular task. Two Project Challenges at the end of every Project encourage users to practice the skills learned in the lessons. This reinforcement of skills helps users understand what they just learned, and strengthens their comprehension of FrontPage. Their new level of competency with the application inspires users to try their skills in real world circumstances. A Web Portfolio is modified at the end of every Project. This Portfolio encourages users to add content, structural modifications, advanced Web development functions and so on related to the lessons in the Project. When users finish the book they have a personalized, functioning completed work that reflects their level of proficiency with FrontPage. Three appendixes cover more advanced topics related to Web development and explain how to integrate these technologies with FrontPage where possible. The first appendix illustrates how Office 97 applications can be integrated with the Web. Specific examples of how to convert Word documents, Excel worksheets, PowerPoint presentations and Access database information into Web ready formats is demonstrated. The second appendix provides detailed information on how to create an inline, embedded and external style sheet using Windows and FrontPage. Finally, the third appendix gives an overview of Java and JavaScript with an emphasis on the strengths of each language and their potential uses in Web development. This book includes a CD-ROM that contains all of the data files used in the book lessons. Also, the CD-ROM contains several Web-related computer programs that can be used to create and modify graphics, Web pages, and add advanced Web development functions. Many of these programs can be used to enhance your FrontPage Web. The Web site prenhall.com/zimmerman that accompanies this book provides links to numerous Web sites related to Web development. Links are provided to online tutorials, graphics libraries, advanced language resources, and many other Web development resources. This site will be frequently updated to provide you with the latest information and sites of interest to Web developers.

Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML |
| Tired of reading HTML books that only make sense after you're an expert? Then it's about time you picked up Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML and really learned HTML. You want to learn HTML so you can finally create those web pages you've always wanted, so you can communicate more effectively with friends, family, fans, and fanatic customers. You also want to do it right so you can actually maintain and expand your Web pages over time, and so your web pages work in all the browsers and mobile devices out there. Oh, and if you've never heard of CSS, that's okay - we won't tell anyone you're still partying like it's 1999 - but if you're going to create Web pages in the 21st century then you'll want to know and understand CSS. Learn the real secrets of creating Web pages, and why everything your boss told you about HTML tables is probably wrong (and what to do instead). Most importantly, hold your own with your co-worker (and impress cocktail party guests) when he casually mentions how his HTML is now strict, and his CSS is in an external style sheet. With Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML, you'll avoid the embarrassment of thinking web-safe colors still matter, and the foolishness of slipping a font tag into your pages. Best of all, you'll learn HTML and CSS in a way that won't put you to sleep. If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect: a visually-rich format designed for the way your brain works. Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science, and learning theory, this book will load HTML, CSS, and XHTML into your brain in a way that sticks. So what are you waiting for? Leave those other dusty books behind and come join us in Webville. Your tour is about to begin. "Elegant design is at the core of every chapter here, each concept conveyed with equal doses of pragmatism and wit." --Ken Goldstein, Executive Vice President, Disney Online "This book is a thoroughly modern introduction to forward-looking practices in web page markup and presentation." --Danny Goodman, author of Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Guide "What used to be a long trial and error learning process has now been reduced neatly into an engaging paperback." --Mike Davidson, CEO, Newsvine, Inc. "I love Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML--it teaches you everything you need to learn in a 'fun coated' format!" --Sally Applin, UI Designer and Artist "I haven't had as much fun reading a book (other than Harry Potter) in years. And your book finally helped me break out of my hapless so-last-century way of creating web pages." --Professor David M. Arnow, Department of Computer and Information Science, Brooklyn College "If you've ever had a family member who wanted you to design a website for them, buy them Head First HTML with CSS and XHTML. If you've ever asked a family member to design you a web site, buy this book. If you've ever bought an HTML book and ended up using it to level your desk, or for kindling on a cold winter day, buy this book. This is the book you've been waiting for. This is the learning system you've been waiting for." --Warren Kelly, Blogcritics.org

CSS: The Missing Manual |
| Web site design has grown up. Unlike the old days, when designers cobbled together chunky HTML, bandwidth-hogging graphics, and a prayer to make their sites look good, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) now lets your inner designer come out and play. But CSS isn't just a tool to pretty up your site; it's a reliable method for handling all kinds of presentation--from fonts and colors to page layout. "CSS: The Missing Manual" clearly explains this powerful design language and how you can use it to build sparklingly new Web sites or refurbish old sites that are ready for an upgrade. Like their counterparts in print page-layout programs, style sheets allow designers to apply typographic styles, graphic enhancements, and precise layout instructions to elements on a Web page. Unfortunately, due to CSS's complexity and the many challenges of building pages that work in all Web browsers, most Web authors treat CSS as a kind of window-dressing to spruce up the appearance of their sites. Integrating CSS with a site's underlying HTML is hard work, and often frustratingly complicated. As a result many of the most powerful features of CSS are left untapped. With this book, beginners and Web-building veterans alike can learn how to navigate the ins-and-outs of CSS and take complete control over their Web pages' appearance. Author David McFarland (the bestselling author of O'Reilly's "Dreamweaver: The Missing Manual") combines crystal-clear explanations, real-world examples, a dash of humor, and dozens of step-by-step tutorials to show you ways to design sites with CSS that work consistently across browsers. You'll learn how to: Create HTML that's simpler, uses less code, is search-engine friendly, and works well with CSS Style text by changing fonts, colors, font sizes, and adding borders Turn simple HTML links into complex and attractive navigation bars-complete with CSS-only rollover effects that add interactivity to your Web pages Style images to create effective photo galleries and special effects like CSS-based drop shadows Make HTML forms look great without a lot of messy HTML Overcome the most hair-pulling browser bugs so your Web pages work consistently from browser to browser Create complex layouts using CSS, including multi-column designs that don't require using old techniques like HTML tables Style Web pages for printing Unlike competing books, this Missing Manual doesn't assume that everyone in the world only surfs the Web with Microsoft's Internet Explorer; our book provides support for all major Web browsers and is one of the first books to thoroughly document the newly expanded CSS support in IE7, currently in beta release. Want to learn how to turn humdrum Web sites into destinations that will capture viewers and keep them longer? Pick up "CSS: The Missing Manual" and learn the real magic of this tool.
