Useful Books and Software

The first of four main sections covers the basics: the interface, setting up GoLive preferences, and how the program works. Section two is all about "Pages"--the visual page editor, the text editor, and everything you can do with both. "Sites," section three, covers GoLive's excellent site-management tools, and section four discusses advanced topics like JavaScript, DHTML, cascading style sheets, and more.

The book is more like an extensive reference source than a tutorial. Virtually every feature is explained and can be looked up in the index, but you won't find a concise chapter on how to build an awesome site from A to B. This is the kind of book that you use as a desk reference, looking up topics as needed. Often, the examples cited are explained and illustrated more clearly than in Adobe's documentation.

One drawback is the lack of a CD-ROM. Examples, projects, source code, code snippets, animation--even a demo version of GoLive itself--would more than justify a CD-ROM. On the other hand, there are plenty of screen shots and sidebars.

GoLive 5 has matured into a powerful tool and has become a valuable member of the Adobe product family. Real World Adobe GoLive 5 is an important asset and reference book for the GoLive user. --Mike Caputo

With a CD-ROM containing all of the project and media files, and each of the dozen or so chapters written in a concise and clear manner, the book makes it easy for users new to GoLive to climb the learning curve and gain a high level of proficiency in a relatively short period of time. Most chapters have been updated to showcase the new features of version 5.

There are over 12 chapters covering a range of topics: from application basics and how to preview work in a real Web browser; through the basics of Web design, the use of tables and frames, forms and cascading style sheets; and on to global management of large Web sites. The more experienced Web designer will probably not find much new information here, but an experienced designer new to GoLive will appreciate this resource.

Each chapter ends with a series of review questions and answers, and each chapter builds on the chapters that came before, making the book suitable for a formal training environment as well as users learning on their own. The only drawback is the lack of a demo version of GoLive on the CD. It is available on Adobe's site, but why not save someone the trouble of downloading it?

There are few areas of computer technology as dynamic and competitive as Web design software. Standards are anything but, plug-ins proliferate, and even the core coding language, HTML, is constantly evolving. Designers must maintain a constant state of training and learning, and any software publisher who maintains a solid educational program wins the hearts of their customers. The first chapters introduce GoLive's working environment. Adobe GoLive 4 is cross-platform instruction, but since the application's interface differs little between Windows and Macintosh, there is minimal chance for confusion. The book then takes the reader through basic Web page assembly, placing and formatting text, and using GoLive's layout tools. Even users with extensive experience in layout applications like Quark or PageMaker may be daunted at first by GoLive's vastly different toolbars and inspectors, but the book provides many tips that clarify perplexing palettes or actions, warn about problems that can arise, or give advice on how to set preferences for optimal performance.

Adobe GoLive 4 also covers placing images, working with links, animating elements on the page, and working with the built-in HTML editors and the extensive site management tools. Topics like QuickTime authoring or JavaScript actions get a basic introduction.

An intermediate user will find Adobe GoLive 4 a good book for sharpening skills. For example, readers who are already comfortable with GoLive's Button tool for creating rollovers can look up the section on layers and the Show/Hide action and construct a multiple event rollover in short order.

Adobe chose a traditional style for this textbook, documenting the capabilities of GoLive one at a time with brief introductory paragraphs, stepped procedures, and screen shots that show the relevant pieces of the user interface. The illustrations effectively show processes--a series of three or more pictures might show how to select and modify an element, as well as the end result--but they and the steps usually manage to show only the standard way of doing something. There's less coverage of odd cases and obscure capabilities. Still, this book will get you off the ground and using Adobe GoLive effectively. --David Wall
