Adobe Golive Classroom in a Book: Classroom in a Book
Appropriate for beginning to intermediate web design students using GoLive. Developed by the software-training experts at Adobe Systems, the Classroom in a Book series offers complete, self-paced lessons for learning the features of Adobe software quickly and easily. Each book includes a CD-ROM with customized full-color files to guide students through the lessons and special projects. Each chapter concludes with a review section to reinforce what students have learned.

Setting up a Web site ranks among the most deceptively simple tasks in all of computerdom. At the end of the day, you just edit documents (and who hasn't done that before?). Even HTML, the underlying language of Web pages, is pretty easy to understand. But once the creation process gets underway, it becomes apparent that HTML coding is tedious, and that page designers often spend hours figuring out tiny layout details. Adobe GoLive CS is meant to ease and automate the process of creating and maintaining sites, and Adobe GoLive CS Classroom in a Book should serve you well as a tutorial and guide during your first GoLive projects.

Adobe chose a traditional style for this textbook, documenting the capabilities of GoLive one at a time with brief introductory paragraphs, stepped procedures, and screen shots that show the relevant pieces of the user interface. The illustrations effectively show processes--a series of three or more pictures might show how to select and modify an element, as well as the end result--but they and the steps usually manage to show only the standard way of doing something. There's less coverage of odd cases and obscure capabilities. Still, this book will get you off the ground and using Adobe GoLive effectively. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Adobe GoLive CS to create and manage Web sites, assuming you've never done much work along those lines before. In addition to the essentials of text layout, hyperlinks, and tables, this book covers JavaScript for image rollover effects (and some others), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for consistent application of design rules, and the GoLive features related to ongoing site management.

For a Newbie, It's a Must HaveRating:
I had never used GoLive but decided to purchase it for the non-profit for which I was webmaster. As a user of other Adobe products, I had learned not to buy the first edition of Classroom, but to wait for subsequent editions, which contained corrections to the inevitable errors found in the first.

I purchased this one and was delighted with it. Using the exercises, I got the rudiments of using the application in about 2-3 days. After that, I used it pretty much as a reference and found it somewhat more handy that the User Guide for that purpose. Within a workweek, having learned what I did from this book, I was able to upload the site to our domain host and perform daily maintenance quickly and easily. Over the three+ years I managed the site, I returned to this book several times to refresh my memory on something or to learn to do something new that had not previously been needed.

When I left, I advised my replacement to spend her infrequently busy first days while everyone else was on holiday, to work through the book. Using what she'd learned, she was able to make minor changes to the website from her third day, despite having NO experience with website management. This has ensured requests to me for help are much lower.

It may not have worked for everyone, but for me it's been an extremely useful book!

Adobe GoLive CS Classroom in a Book RevisedRating:
This is a great product that Adobe makes. I did the the whole book and learned a lot about web design. I'm now trying to make my own web site and I have many of the basics, though, I have to admit, still a lot of questions. I don't know what they could have done more so that I could design now with the greatest of ease, unless they would know exactly the type of web site that I want to design. And of course there are as many types of web sites as there are types of houses. But again, they gave me a lot of the basics in a very hands-on way that I could drill them, so I recommend the CIB series. I learned a lot about InDesign a few years ago with the CIB for that, for example, too. It's an economic, effective way to learn the basics.

Excellent Resource for Beginners Rating:
I am a technician by trade, but I am very new to the web building world. The last time I attempted to build a web page was when c-tags were in style. When I bought this book I knew almost nothing about GoLive CS. I have now completed most of the lessons in the book and I will say I was hard-pressed to find any errors. Trust me, I know error proned books (i.e. CCNA). This book is perfect for a beginner and will lead one by the hand. The lesson material on the CD uses good examples. The book is far from exhaustive, but it will get one started. There is a whole lot in GoLive that is left to explore. After reading the book I have been able to build a good sized web site with many pages, and with many different styles.

Essential tool to get started with GoLiveRating:
One thing GoLive is not and that is intuitive. This book starts you off with a hands on approach and after a time it starts to make sense. I used it methodically and did not find any mistakes mentioned in the other reviews - it helps to use one's head and guess where one overlooked, or mis-understood an instruction as the program is very fiddly. Highly recommended.
