VoiceXML: 10 Projects to Voice Enable Your Web Site |
| A complete, hands-on guide to building Internet voice applications VoiceXML is rapidly becoming the de facto language standard for handling the transition from visual Web browsing to synthesized text-to-speech information access. This book provides Web designers, database managers, and systems designers with all the tools and templates they need to accomplish this transition in the least amount of time and at the lowest possible cost. Mark Miller walks readers step-by-step through ten real world applications-from statement of the problem through code examination, error checking, and deployment-to clearly demonstrate how to use currently available tools, techniques, and strategies for building Internet voice applications. Accompanying each applications project is a telephone number that allows readers to listen to, and interact with, an actual working example of the application. Responding to the ongoing needs of IT professionals for current and reliable information on the latest technologies, Wiley Computer Publishing introduces the Gearhead Press titles. These books, written by accomplished trainers in their respective fields, focus on real-world examples and case studies to give readers the best information on leading topics. The Gearhead Press titles are characterized by two imprints: In the Trenches and Point to Point-both series include fast-paced books written by fellow IT professionals who have been there and done that. In the Trenches books introduce technologies, guide readers to proficiency, and serve as practical, hands-on references after the initial tasks are accomplished. The Point to Point titles invite readers to join an IT team at a model company and implement technologies in real-world environments-demonstrating actual problems and solutions. Companion Web site features code samples, working demos, links to most current specs, and updates.

Accelerated DOM Scripting with Ajax, APIs, and Libraries |
If you're a web developer with previous JavaScript and DOM scripting experience, Accelerated DOM Scripting with Ajax, APIs, and Libraries is perfect for you to take your knowledge up to the next level. This book is about JavaScript and using the document object model—the conduit to the HTML document. This book is not about learning how to program JavaScript from scratch. It starts with the assumption that you have done some JavaScript development before and understand the JavaScript syntax. This book builds on top of that knowledge to give you a deeper understanding of DOM Scripting and how to apply that to your projects. It uses this new understanding to describe what JavaScript libraries are and show you how they can be applied to your project. The book will also explain Ajax and how best to plan and apply it to your projects. It explains how to build simple animation objects for adding movement to elements on the page. There are straightforward examples that demonstrate the techniques used throughout the book. JavaScript has seen a resurgence in popularity over the past few years, and with it has come an exploration of the power of the language as well as what it can do within the browser. This book will explain techniques new and old—such as closures, encapsulation, and inheritance—that many are using and how you can best apply them to your own projects. By reading this book, you should have a greater understanding of how JavaScript works and be able to use advanced concepts such as closures and event delegation to build more flexible applications for the Web. You'll walk away with a greater appreciation for JavaScript libraries and how they can simplify and speed up your development. You'll also be able to implement Ajax effectively into your site, create special effects, use JavaScript libraries, and know how best to apply these libraries to your projects. What you'll learn- Where CSS, HTML, and the DOM fit into modern scripting, and how to use them together effectively
- OOP techniques for more efficient JavaScript coding
- How to use JavaScript libraries such as Prototype in your work
- How to build effective form validation into your applications using Ajax
- How to create mashups using APIs
- How to build dynamic user interfaces
Who is this book for? This book is for beginner to intermediate developers, and already have knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Building B2B Applications With Xml: A Resource Guide |
What every IT manager and system administrator needs to know about the technology that drives the B2B marketplace The B2B marketplace is rapidly exploding--fast outpacing business-to-consumer e-commerce and expected to reach more than $7 trillion in sales by 2004. This guidebook equips XML authors, programmers, and managers with the technology know-how they need to create and develop simple yet robust B2B systems from scratch. It provides easy-to-understand explanations on how and why XML and other important technologies such as HTTP and MIME are driving the B2B marketplace. Along with XML and Java code examples, readers will find broad coverage of emerging standards and protocols, including Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), ebXML from OASIS/UN/CEFACT, XML Common Business Language (xCBL), BizTalk, and Commerce XML (cXML).
If we ever reach the point where businesses can efficiently and cost-effectively transfer information among themselves, chances are that XML will be the key technology that makes it all work. Building B2B Applications with XML offers an overview of using XML as a data transfer mechanism between organizations. Although this area is still really in its infancy, this book lends good perspective to the benefits of XML and offers a snapshot of the current landscape of standards. Author Michael Fitzgerald aims the book at both managers looking to grasp the general concept of B2B, and software developers looking for a little more detail about where to start with such an initiative. The first part of the book describes the fundamentals of the XML standard, transport mechanisms, and security techniques that come into play when designing a B2B solution. The XML overview isn't a comprehensive tutorial, but rather a quick run-through of all the various components of XML, such as DTDs, Schemas, and transformations. The transport section discusses HTTP, FTP, MIME, SMTP, and other standards key to communicating data. The demonstrations are conducted in Java. The second part of the book will be of greatest value to software developers. It explores some of the key standards currently available in the XML world. The reader gets a look at ebXML, xCBL, cXML, SOAP, and BizTalk. All of these are essential initiatives for an XML developer to keep current on. The book's easy-to-read style makes it suitable for non-programmers, but its content is detailed enough to warrant a read by seasoned coders. While it isn't a panacea for the challenges of XML B2B, it's a good place to start. --Stephen W. Plain Topics covered: - B2B overview

Conexiones: Comunicacion Y Cultura (Workbook/Lab Manual) |
The organization of the Workbook parallels that of the main text and it also provides useful review for students. The Workbook offers further practice of each chapter's vocabulary and grammatical structures through form-based exercises including sentence-building activities, completion exercises, fill-ins, and realia-based activities. The Lab Manual activities are used in conjunction with the Audioprogram recordings of listening comprehension passages. Listening strands include recordings of authentic conversations, interviews, announcements, news reports, and so on. A variety of comprehension-check and information-processing activities follow each listening passage. Answers to these activities are found at the end of the Workbook/Lab Manual.

Definitive VoiceXML |
Definitive VoiceXML was written to bridge the knowledge gap between the disparate worlds of telephony engineering and enterprise computing. Most VoiceXML books are written like any other programming book on a new technology-a few example programs and lots of command reference material -- and don't provide the depth of information needed for telephony applications. Enterprise information system developers traditionally know very little about the nuts-and-bolts problems of developing a voice application, while telephony application developers rarely understand enterprise information systems. To successfully develop voice applications, technology professionals will need to become proficient in both disciplines. With this book, readers will learn in detail about the VoiceXML language, how it can be used to develop enterprise-level voice applications, and how to integrate VoiceXML with other enterprise technologies. The audience will also learn about other related voice processing technologies and how to they are used with VoiceXML. This will be one of the first books to cover the completed vxml 2.0 specification, which is still in the final stages before its release.
