One of the best new features is the split code and design view, which lets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changes instantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so you can create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, the Live Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handle common tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert and update records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active Server Pages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does not support PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, although because UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins. The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its great strength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDev handle the data access code. You can even display live data at design time, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the ideal package for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimum of fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create both vector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and add numerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In the default vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and in bit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers and masks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enabling designers to achieve a wide range of effects. As an enhancement library for Dreamweaver 3.0, CourseBuilder simplifies both the visual application of interactive elements (sliders, customized submit buttons, images that swap out when a user clicks on the right page location, or drag-and-drop functionality) and building the stuff of grammar-school terror: multiple choice, true/false, check all that apply, fill in the blank. As is the case when using Dreamweaver, it's helpful to have some knowledge of the coding behind the scenes while working on your Web projects. However, CourseBuilder can save even the expert a large amount of time through its preformatted sequences.

Functional improvements over the earlier version include the ability to edit an interaction you've just created, embed Authorware packages in a Web page, and assign a separate layer to a CourseBuilder Interaction. The new ability to undo your mistakes, action by action, is a great blessing; in a Web-authoring tool rich with buttons and menus, it was good to see a few subtle enhancements to the interface for clarity of use.

For those who want to get fancy with databases and server-side scripts, CourseBuilder can accommodate sending data through HTML, ASP, and Cold Fusion tags. If your Web server is running computer-managed instruction software (CMI), such as Lotus Pathware 3.02 or higher, CourseBuilder also has a feature called Knowledge Track, enabling your interaction to communicate its data back to the CMI server. All in all, CourseBuilder is a strong enhancement to the rich Dreamweaver environment. --Betsy Aoki

This is a visual editor, which means you can create and edit a Web page by selecting items such as tables, forms, and images from a tabbed palette. The Properties panel lets you specify details such as borders, styles, and hyperlinks, and you can also use the visual editor for frames and layers. Many designers also like to edit the underlying HTML, and this is where Dreamweaver MX comes into its own. It supports either a pure code view or a split view that lets you click seamlessly between the code and visual editors. A lot of the features previously found in HomeSite, Macromedia's text-based Web editor, are now integrated into Dreamweaver, including pop-up code hints, a snippets panel that lets you keep handy pieces of code for reuse, and a tag chooser that lets you grab the right tag from a list. An O'Reilly tag reference is built in.

Dreamweaver's template support deserves special mention. Templates give you a quick start with a number of predesigned pages. In Dreamweaver MX, they can also be used to lock down areas of the page, so that contributors can create and edit a story without disturbing the design. Templates can be nested so that changes to an underlying template ripple through the pages that use it for powerful site-wide updates.

Macromedia used to market a product called Dreamweaver UltraDev, which allowed for rapid development of Web applications featuring online databases, member login, and other server-side elements. In Dreamweaver MX, this capability is built in. It has also been extended, adding support for ASP.NET and PHP as well as ColdFusion, JavaServer pages, and traditional ASP. Nonspecialists will find themselves able to build rich dynamic pages, while the integrated code editor makes this a capable development product as well. In fact, Dreamweaver MX has also replaced ColdFusion Studio as the primary development tool for ColdFusion MX. It is a uniquely flexible package.

Overall, it's hard to find fault with Dreamweaver MX. It's true that its complexity and professional features make it harder to pick up than some rival products. The abundance of panels and options can be confusing, and a high-resolution screen is required. In addition, the Studio MX products, which include Dreamweaver, are a better value for those who need more than one of the MX series. However, this takes nothing away from the excellence of Dreamweaver as the first-choice tool for professionals. --Tim Anderson
